Dear Mr. Awad and Assemblyman Shaw:
My name is Prof. Brian Levin and I am director of the Center for the Study of Hate
& Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino. I have devoted my life to combating bigotry, including Islamophobia, for which I was recognized by entities as varied as Congress, the National Academies, Al Jazeera and the Saudi Ambassador to the United States. Please see:
On the morning of Monday, October 12, 2009 I appeared on Los Angeles area radio station KPFK with a spokesperson from your organization named Munira Syeda about the reprehensible conduct of neo-Nazis in Riverside, California, who we both oppose. Ms. Syeda, however, also made the following legally defamatory statement about me at the end of an exchange where I did not have an opportunity to respond:
Whether or not you agree with my factual statements regarding your organization’s regrettable invitations to individuals over the past decade who have been called out as anti-Semites and extremists by groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center and others is a separate issue. These speakers include, but are not limited to, a neo-Nazi affiliated with the same group that the Holocaust Museum shooter once worked for, as well as an individual who maintains Jews, the U.S. government and the Saudi Royal family masterminded 9/11. See:http://www.pe.com/localnews/opinion/localviews/stories/PE_OpEd_Opinion_S_op_24_ibish_levin_loc.405f806.htmlA
In any event, an ad hominem defamatory attack on my work and me without any supporting evidence is beyond the pale. I have spent over twenty years, longer than CAIR has been in existence, combating bigotry, including the disgusting scourge of Islamophobia. This includes research under the Hon. A Leon Higginbotham, and then later with a position at the Southern Poverty Law Center after my graduation from Stanford Law School, where I was a recipient of the Civil Liberties Award. A quick Internet search will establish my record in Congress, in scholarship, at the Supreme Court and elsewhere.
I demand an immediate and unequivocal public apology for this unjustifiable smear and am copying my attorney on this correspondence. Please feel free to email me at blevin8@aol.com or call my office at (909) 537-7711.
Awaiting your response.
Sincerely,
Brian Levin, Esq.
